David Ponsford (organ)About
David Ponsford has spent much of his career studying this repertoire, resulting in his book French Organ Music in the Reign of Louis XIV (Cambridge University Press, 2011). The present series of recordings on the most important historical organs in France, including the music of Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers, Louis Couperin, Nicolas-Antoine Lebègue, André Raison, Jacques Boyvin, François Couperin, Nicolas de Grigny, Louis Marchand, Louis-Nicolas Clérambault, up to composers of the Revolution such as Balbastre, Beauvarlet-Charpentier and Lasceux, is therefore the fruit of many ye ars of research by a seasoned performer whose aim is to combine technical brilliance with intellectual understanding, to bring the music alive with authority and meaning.
In order to present a wide a range of Boyvin’s music, as many suites as possible have been included on this double-CD set. However, owing to the limited capacity of any CD it was necessary to excise one two-minute movement. Sadly, the final Grand dialogue from Suite 6, Book 1 (which might well have been an alternative to the penultimate Petit dialogue en fugue sans tremblant) had to be sacrificed in order to accommodate the remainder of this suite.
Purchasers of the present 2-CD set may obtain a download of this movement, free of charge from www.wyastone.co.uk/french-organ-music-volume-6-boyvin.html
Performed on the Organ of Saint-Michel, Bolbec
